Romeo and Juliet: Balcony Scene Glossary

At lover's perjuries they say Jove laughs.

This common Elizabethan saying comes directly from Ovid's Ars Amatoria: "Jupiter from on high smiles at the perjuries of lovers" (1.633). Jupiter, known in English as Jove, was the supreme ruler of the Roman gods.
